I guess the school system is set up that way, although they do have macs there i think they are used mostly in the computer department to teach web design and things like that. Not sure why they have both kinds but i guess the computer teachers know what they are doing (I hope). But with any kind of luck i should be completely done next May. Then i have to decide if i want to keep going and get a Bachelor's

Gods I remember WordPerfect...using Word 2013 here. BigA, I'll recommend this-go into your Windows Updater and see which updates are important and which are optional-I usually go with just the important ones myself. You can also uncheck ones you don't want to download. I'd ask my friend, but am kinda afraid he'll get pissed-try it when he's in a better mood, so that'll give you time to back everything up.
Edit: what version of Windows are you running by the way-I was assuming 7 when I posted that thing about Updater. Managed to ask if there were any to watch out for and got 'not that I know of'.

I usually only download the important ones, which is what i did this time, and it screwed my whole system up. I am able to use the computer, but there are things on here that do not work any more. I only have a couple more weeks in this semester, and then i guess i will have to reformat the hard drive. Pain in my butt, usually takes a week from start to finish between loading all the updates again and finding all my programs that i need and reloading them, not to mention backing everything up.

So it is a Win7-not to familiar with Win8 (something I'm glad of, mind you!) I've recently turned my old XP into a server computer-had to deal with that being a petaQ about 'it's not supported anymore' *rolls eyes* Got rid of AVG (it was taking over when the scan was running and had to keep doing a hard shut down) and went with ZoneAlarm (talk about getting 'bringing in the Rottweiler' [as my friends are so fond of saying]). Recently had to add in MalwareBytes due to something getting in (trust me, I was NOT happy that night). Was ever so glad that night to have the XP because I was able to run the needed relevant searches after pulling the network cable on the Win7.

I have used Zonealarm for years with no problems. I really don't think any of them are able to keep up anymore with all the new stuff coming down the pike. Win7 has done a pretty good job for me so far at least up until this last MS update. Now i have a few programs that are not opening on startup. I went into msconfig and turned the one off with no problems, but I can't turn the other one off and it won't uninstall because of the missing files.
I heard win 8 is junk, and they are coming out with either 9 or 10 next not sure which.

XP was excellent, Vista was crap. 7 awesome, 8 was a total flop. If the pattern follows, we're in for a good product
