*groans at the post* I don't understand half of that, but I agree-Vista and ME weren't worth the software they were programmed on

Miranda has Vista on her older laptop, just bought a new Toshiba laptop with 8.1. And a Ipad type device. First thing she had to do was go through all of both of them and turn stuff off. It was sucking the ISP meter down way too fast. :affraid:
Its all touch screen - but so far so good. I have tons of credits anyway since we actually don't download a lot of stuff. I'll make a attempt to try to learn some of the touch screen stuff. :rolleye:

My new samsung blue ray works off the wifi for updates also. But that was crazy with the new laptop, I gathered there was a lot of things running and sucking down updates and info just wham.

Yeah, a lot of those programs will drag your connection down into the mud. I check what's installed and actually found a great site: http://www.shouldiremoveit.com/programs.aspx - you can see how people recommend programs.
Just stay away from anything from Conduit...that'll mess your comp up: http://www.shouldiremoveit.com/Conduit- ... isher.aspx

I'm back from DIT. They ran out of Window 7. But a new shipment is due this afternoon. I paid for one on my credit card. They'll hold it for me and I'll pick it up after work on Friday.

Which brings up a important point. Microsoft is no longer printing 7. So if you are considering buying one you need to do it soon. The real geek-owned computer places are already running low. The office supply places and Best Buy will have them a little longer, but eventually they'll all be sold.

Just a FYI for anyone wanting to upgrade from WinXP to Windows7 or (shudder) 8......
Obtain a copy of Windows Vista, through whatever means you find convenient (NOTE: You won't actually be registering it, so ..... Look to the Darkside)
Use Vista to upgrade WinXP, you can then upgrade to your purchased copy of 7 or (ick) 8, while keeping most of your stuff intact.
However, make sure you stay with the same bit version as you upgrade up, as converting from 32 to 64 (or vice versa) will require a complete wipe.

8.1 is not too bad but I've got it running on a couple of good sized machines RAM wise. The UI takes some getting used to but the shell extension "Classic Shell" puts things back to normal again. I still prefer Windows Server 2000 or XP if I have to use windows. Ubuntu or Fedora Core if I can use Linux.

I decided to upgrade one of my machines to 7 (from XP). Wish I read DaFox's suggestion first, to ease the transition. The Windows advisor - or whatever it was to check compatibility - indicated most of my programs were OK, and the machine's capability was definitely OK.

Anyway, I formatted the C: partition on the drive, and installed 7 as a new/fresh OS. Have my most frequently used proggies on another computer (and periodic backups), and thought transferring them back to the 7 machine would not be difficult.

Took WAY too long to get 7 to "play nice". Transferring some of my (freeware) programs to the 7 machine via LAN caused lockups (some were not even "blue screens of death"). After a couple of days of fiddling, and many reboots, all seemed to be working OK, so I registered the 7 version with Microsoft.

2.5 Gig memory, 3 GHz Intel CPU ... should have been easier.

====

Snyper -

I tried various versions of Linux at various times.
Opinion:
* Quite decent for folks who use email, wordprocessing, and other casual use of computer, since there are some Plug 'n Play versions of linux available.
* Good expansion capabilities for those that grok linux in depth ... but learning the new peculiarities of a different OS was too time consuming for me... I have a few special applications that Windows handles well, but are not easily available in Linux (and my code writing days are pretty much in the past).

====

Wife's new laptop is a Chrome device. VERY user-friendly, for those who do not want to delve into the innards of programming. Lots of supported apps. Since Wife uses her machine solely for email & surfing, it seems to be ideal.

I'm actually considered a Linux specialist in my job so there's not much you or anyone can say to make me stop loving FLOSS. Our client runs Red Hat so I like linux distros of that ILK although the Debian class (Ubuntu etc) is very user friendly, although the new UI (user interface) takes some getting used to...like the windows 8 UI. I noticed that Win 8 has no start button on the desktop but 8.1 does

Yea, I floss my teeth regularly too :tngraz:

Nothing in general against Liinus or Linux ... it was/is a good OS for school systems who did not want to pay the exorbitant Windows licensing fees some years ago. Also good for other folks, as I mentioned in previous post. Since I was introduced to PCs that only ran under DOS, a century ago, the command line is a familiar friend.

It is the requirement to learn additional syntax that was off-putting. I commend you on absorbing it! (The more memory I put in my machines, the less memory I have in my head).
