Router Question
by Guest on Sun Aug 03, 2014 7:50 pm

I have a bit of a silly question. I was looking into the attached devices on my router yesterday and noticed something odd. Aside from my computer & Xbox, my husband's Xbox was showing up in the wired devices. However........my husband's Xbox is on wireless and no other devices are connected by wire. Does anyone know what would be causing that ?

It's a NETGEAR router.

Guest,
That does seem odd!

What I could find (Via xbox.com forums) was this bit of information:

"when you use a wired connection compared to a wireless connection the ip address get confused with the router when you have more then on conection hooked up at once.I find have a direct conection form your xbox 360 to you modem not useing the router is best.but if you have more then one thing connected the router gets your ip with your xbox 360 confused with your computer ip address. In most cases resetting your router or modem for 30secounds will do the trick in most cases."

Not sure if it's the right info, but sounds pretty close. Hope it helps though.

Could also be the xbox sometimes "pulls" a static or fixed ip from the router even when not, or in this case, ever in use. For example, the xbox probably joined your home network on an address of 192.168.0.x We know it has to be .0.x because you indicated you had a Netgear router. We also know that (x), the last number in the octet would equal nothing higher than 255

If it any time, the xbox was plugged into the router or, even an inadvertent attempt during installation was made to access the local netgear network, the xbox would store or retain an address from the netgear's pool of 255 possible addresses. Since I would assume you have no intention of connecting 253 possible other devices to your network, you can be assured there will be no conflict, this is completely normal and can be ignored.

Thank you Herman :-D It just kind of freaked me out to see an additional wired device when I knew one wasn't there.

And the matter has been escalated (as they say in IT jargon)

Thanks for adding that important bit of info in, Herman
